How to Color a Piano
A few simple tricks make a piano page look much more like the real thing:
- Do the black keys first. On a real piano the black keys sit in repeating groups of two and three. Fill those in, leave the white keys white, and the keyboard instantly looks right. A full-size piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black.
- Pick a real piano finish. Most pianos are glossy black, warm wood brown or white. For a wood look, color a light brown base, then add thin darker strokes all in the same direction to suggest grain.
- Add a shine. On a black piano, leave one thin white streak uncolored along the lid or side. It reads as a reflection and makes the piano look polished.
- Or ignore the rules. Rainbow keys, a polka-dot piano or a purple princess grand all work. The cat and ribbon pages are perfect for wild colors.
Piano Activities for Lessons and Classrooms
- Find the C keys. Before coloring, ask young learners to find every C: it’s the white key just to the left of each group of two black keys. Color all the Cs one color.
- Practice reward. Let students color one section of the page after each practice session until the whole picture is done.
- Recital or end-of-term card. The ribbon piano makes an easy handmade card for a teacher or a student after a performance.
- Music-themed party table. Print a mix of the easy cat page and the detailed upright so every age at the table has something to color.
